You light a candle, the room smells right for an hour, and by the evening it is gone. In a carpeted flat with curtains and upholstery, that same candle would still be doing something the next morning. The difference is not the candle.
Hard surfaces do not hold scent
Upholstery, curtains and textiles hold scent for far longer than hard surfaces do. A Mediterranean flat is mostly hard surface: hydraulic cement or terrazzo floors, tiled kitchens and bathrooms, plaster walls, wooden shutters instead of curtains. There is almost nothing in the room for the fragrance to settle into, so it disperses and leaves.
Open windows finish the job. Cross-ventilation is how a Spanish flat stays cool in August, and it is also how the scent leaves the building.
Stop relying on one source
A single candle releases scent unevenly and only while it is lit. Layering is the standard fix: pair something quick with something continuous, so there is a background rather than a burst.

Give the room one soft surface
This is the part most fragrance advice skips. Scent needs somewhere to live. A rug, a folded throw over a chair, a linen runner on a console, curtains you were going to buy anyway. Adding a single soft layer near the fragrance source does more than upgrading the candle.

Use a room spray for the gap
A spray is not a substitute for a candle, it is the thing you use ten minutes before someone arrives. Room Spray Oud Mood is 5.50 euros. Spray into fabric rather than into the air: the curtain, the rug, the throw. Sprayed at a tiled floor it is gone in minutes.
Placement, briefly
- Away from the window. The cross-breeze that cools the flat will carry your fragrance out of it.
- Near a doorway between rooms. Air moves there, which distributes rather than disperses.
- Not in the kitchen. Cooking wins.
- At sitting height, not floor height. Warm air rises and takes the scent with it.
