Melamine

Melamine is a hard thermoset plastic, moulded under heat into a dense surface that resists scratching far better than the softer plastics used for disposable tableware. It belongs where ceramic is a liability rather than a luxury: terraces, camper vans, poolsides and picnic tables. It has the weight and finish of proper tableware without the risk.

  • Thermoset resin: once moulded and cured, it cannot be re-melted or reshaped, unlike everyday plastics
  • Scratch-resistant: harder than standard food-grade plastic
  • Not microwave-safe: the resin can degrade and release compounds under microwave heat
  • Shatterproof, the property that earns it a place on terraces and camper vans
  • Colour runs through the material, so surface scratches show less than on painted plastic

Care

Dishwasher safe. Never use melamine in a microwave and never cut directly on it: heat damages the surface and a knife scores it permanently.
