A diatomite mat works by absorbing water into the stone and releasing it back into the air, so it is dried rather than cleaned. If it stops drinking water, it needs sanding, not washing.

Care steps

  1. Stand the mat on its edge to air dry fully between uses.
  2. If it stops absorbing quickly, sand the surface lightly with 400 grit sandpaper in a ventilated space, wearing a dust mask against the fine mineral dust.
  3. Never soak or machine wash it: diatomite is a fired mineral, not a textile.
  4. Keep it flat and supported when not drying upright, it can crack under uneven pressure.
  5. Avoid dropping it: it is stone, and it breaks like stone.
