Lit wood wick soy candle in a yellow ceramic pot beside ivory taper candles on stone

Soy wax

Soy wax is pressed from soybean oil and hardened, a plant wax rather than a petroleum by-product like paraffin. It melts at a lower temperature, which means a larger melt pool at a gentler heat and a scent that carries without being cooked. Soy wax burns more slowly than paraffin, so a candle of the same 155 g lasts longer, and it releases no black soot to mark a jar or a ceiling.

Soy wax

Properties

  • Pressed from soybean oil, a plant-derived wax rather than a petroleum by-product
  • Lower melting point than paraffin, producing a wider melt pool and better scent throw
  • Burns slower than paraffin, so the same weight of wax lasts longer
  • Little to no black soot, keeping jars and ceilings clean
  • Needs an even first burn to the edge of the jar or it will tunnel for the rest of its life

Care

Trim the wick to about 5 mm before every burn. Let the first burn run until the melt pool reaches the edge, or the candle will tunnel for the rest of its life.

Soy wax FAQs

Why does my soy candle have a small dip or tunnel in the middle?

This happens when an early burn is put out before the melt pool reaches the jar’s edge, leaving a ring of unmelted wax. Let the first burn run the full width of the jar to prevent it.

Does soy wax burn longer than regular candles?

Yes. Soy wax burns more slowly than paraffin, so a candle of the same weight lasts longer, and it melts at a lower temperature for a wider melt pool.
