Diatomite

Diatomite is a naturally porous mineral formed from the fossilised remains of diatoms, microscopic algae. Its structure is riddled with pores, so it pulls water in on contact and releases it back into the air within minutes. In a bathroom the mineral solves what a cotton mat cannot: a mat that dries itself never sits damp, so it never develops the smell or the mould that follows.

  • Fossilised diatom silica: a porous mineral structure formed over millions of years
  • Capillary absorption: draws water in on contact, then releases it back into the air within minutes
  • The pore structure dries the mat, not a coating or a treatment applied afterwards
  • Naturally mould-resistant, because the surface never stays wet
  • Pores can clog with soap residue and skin oils over time, and light sanding reopens them

Care

Stand it up or hang it to air after use. If absorbency slows, sand the surface lightly with 400 grit paper to reopen the pores. Diatomite is never machine washed.
