PLA

PLA is a plant-based composite made from fermented plant starch rather than petroleum. In the SantHome range it appears in pendant lights, wall lights and vases, printed in a continuous line so the ridged surface is the form itself rather than a finish applied afterwards. It is light in the hand, so a wide shade hangs from an ordinary ceiling fixing, and it takes colour without paint.

  • Polylactic acid: a bioplastic fermented from plant starch, usually corn, not derived from petroleum
  • 3D-printed in a continuous line, so the ridged surface is structural, not a decorative finish
  • Significantly lighter than ceramic or glass for the same size, light enough for hanging fixtures
  • Biodegradable under industrial composting conditions, unlike standard plastics
  • Softens under high heat and direct sun, so it belongs indoors rather than outdoors

Care

Dust dry, wipe marks with mild soapy water and dry at once. Fit LED bulbs, which run cool, and keep the piece out of direct sun. The full routine is in our PLA care guide.

PLA FAQs

Is PLA lighting safe to use with any light bulb?

Fit an LED bulb, which runs cool. PLA softens under sustained high heat, so a hot incandescent or halogen bulb close to the material is not recommended.

Why does PLA lighting have a ridged, textured surface?

It is 3D-printed in a continuous line, so the ridges are the structure itself, not a decorative finish. That texture is also what keeps the piece light enough to hang from an ordinary fixing.
