White slatted diatomite bath mat standing upright to air dry beside a shower organiser

Caring for Diatomite Mats

Diatomite feels solid, but its performance comes from a fine network of pores. Water enters the surface and then evaporates naturally. Soap, dust and bathroom residue can gradually block those pores, while soaking or bending can damage the mat itself. The best routine is light cleaning, full ventilation and a flat floor.

  • Stand upright to dry
  • Do not soak
  • Do not machine wash
  • Do not bleach

Always follow the care label, product page and instructions supplied by the maker. Where these differ from this general guide, the product-specific instructions take precedence.

Everyday use

  • Before first use, wipe or lightly rinse the surface only if the product instructions recommend it.
  • Place the mat on a clean, hard and completely flat floor.
  • Keep the floor beneath it clean and dry to prevent trapped moisture and grit.
  • Rotate the mat occasionally so wear remains even.

Drying

  • After heavy use, stand it upright in a ventilated place so both sides can dry.
  • Air dry naturally away from strong direct heat before returning the mat to the floor.

Cleaning

  • For light residue, wipe with a damp cloth or rinse briefly under running water, following the instructions supplied with the mat.
  • For a persistent surface film, very fine sandpaper may restore absorbency only when sanding is approved for the specific product. Remove all dust afterwards.

Avoid

  • Do not soak or leave submerged in water.
  • Do not place in a washing machine or dishwasher.
  • Avoid bleach, acidic bathroom cleaners and abrasive chemical products.
  • Do not drop, bend or use on an uneven or soft floor.
  • Do not store in a closed space while damp.
