Polypropylene, often shortened to PP, is a low-absorbency synthetic polymer used as both fibre and moulded material. In a woven placemat, it releases water and resists many everyday stains.
Properties
What it is. Because the fibre absorbs very little moisture, a polypropylene weave dries faster than a natural-fibre one. It still needs airflow to dry fully.
Why we choose it. We choose polypropylene for table and bathroom pieces where easy maintenance and low moisture absorption matter.
Look and feel. Often crisp and tightly woven, sometimes finished with a sisal-like texture.
Where it appears. Round woven placemats and a punch-free bathroom shelf.
Natural character. Subtle weave variation and temporary folding marks can appear. Most woven pieces relax after being laid flat.
Care
Wipe or rinse spills and blot dry. Machine wash only when the specific instructions allow. Dry fully on both sides.
Good to know. Avoid high heat, steam cleaning, stiff rotating brushes and storing the material while damp.
Can a polypropylene rug really be left outside all year?
Yes, that is what it is made for. The fibre absorbs almost no water and is colourfast under UV, so it will not stain, mould or fade the way a natural-fibre rug would.
How do I clean a polypropylene outdoor rug?
Shake out loose dirt, wipe with a damp cloth, or rinse it with a hose and let it air dry flat. For a deeper clean, hand wash at 20°C.
