PLA

PLA is a plant-based polymer commonly made from fermented plant starch. In 3D printing, it is laid down in a continuous sequence of fine layers until the full object is formed.

Properties

What it is. The printing process makes complex sculptural shapes possible with relatively little waste. It also creates the fine horizontal texture that gives each object its particular surface.

Why we choose it. We choose PLA for lighting and decor that should feel light, modern and quietly sculptural. It allows form to do the work instead of applied decoration.

Look and feel. Lightweight, matte and finely layered, with a tactile rhythm that follows the shape.

Where it appears. Pendant lights, wall lights, table lamps and vases.

Natural character. Layer lines and small changes where the form alters direction are natural to 3D printing, not surface defects.

Care

Dust softly, keep away from strong heat and use only the specified bulb type and wattage. Use vases with water only when watertightness is confirmed.

Good to know. PLA can soften with heat. Do not place near radiators, flame, hot water or intense enclosed heat.

PLA FAQs

Is PLA lighting safe to use with any light bulb?

Fit an LED bulb, which runs cool. PLA softens under sustained high heat, so a hot incandescent or halogen bulb close to the material is not recommended.

Why does PLA lighting have a ridged, textured surface?

It is 3D-printed in a continuous line, so the ridges are the structure itself, not a decorative finish. That texture is also what keeps the piece light enough to hang from an ordinary fixing.
