Matte black powder-coated metal shelf bracket and rack beside an olive sprig on stone

Metal

Metal gives structure with relatively little material. In the SantHome collection, iron and steel are often powder coated: a dry colour finish is applied and baked onto the surface to protect the metal beneath.

Properties

What it is. The strength comes from the metal; the colour, texture and first line of protection come from the finish. Once that finish is chipped, standing moisture can reach the exposed surface.

Why we choose it. We choose metal for racks, frames, garden furniture and lamps that need to carry weight without taking up visual or physical space.

Look and feel. Cool, precise and structured. Powder coating usually creates a matte or satin surface that reads more softly than polished metal.

Where it appears. A wall coat rack, a garden bench, a table lamp and seasonal decorations.

Natural character. Fine texture, weld points and small differences in coating may remain visible as part of fabrication.

Care

Dust, wipe with mild soapy water and dry fully. Avoid abrasives, chlorine and impacts that may chip the finish.

Good to know. Indoor metal, covered-outdoor metal and fully outdoor-rated metal are not the same. Each product page states the intended environment.

Metal FAQs

Will a powder-coated metal shelf rust?

Not under normal indoor conditions. The powder coating is baked on and fuses into the surface, sealing the metal underneath, as long as the finish is not scraped through.

How much weight can a wall-mounted metal shelf hold?

Metal takes a much thinner cross-section than wood for the same load-bearing strength. Always fix into a stud or use the wall fixings supplied.
